WSOP Main Event Winners |
The origin of the World Series of Poker
The origin of the World Series of Poker go back to 1968 and an
invitational tournament run by Texan, Tom Moore. It was played at
the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno and was won by Crandell
Addington.
Since then, the first event winner Crandell Addington has managed to
place in the top ten of the World Series of Poker Main Event eight
times, an unbeaten achievement still as of 2007.
The tournaments that we know as the World Series
of Poker (WSOP), evolved from the effort of Las Vegas casino owner and
poker player Benny Binion, along with his two sons Jack and Ted.
In 1970, a handful of pro players assembled for
the first WSOP at Binion's Horseshoe, and played a series of cash
games that included not only Texas hold ’em but also five-card stud,
deuce to seven low-ball draw, razz and seven-card stud.
Johnny Moss was elected by his peers as the first World Champion of
Poker and received a silver cup as a prize.
The common format of having the WSOP main event as a
freeze-out Texas hold ’em game, came in the following year.
In 1971, Johnny Moss won the first winner-take-all event
and $30,000. Ever since then, the main event has been a $10,000
buy-in no-limit Texas hold'em freeze out.
Odd numbers
In 1982 main event entry topped 100 (104) for the first time.
In 1991 Brad Daugherty became the first million

In 1994 Russ Hamilton won a bonus of his weight in
silver as it was the 25th time the event was run.
In 2004 more that 1,000 began the main event for
the first time (2,576).
In 2006 Jamie Gold won the biggest prize yet, becoming the
fist player to win an eight figure sum at the WSOP.
