Poker Player Profiles

Scotty Nguyen

Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen, born October 28, 1962 in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Nguyen is a high profile, poker pro. In 1998 he won the World Series of Poker main event and has 4 WSOP bracelets overall.

Nguyen plays with lots of emotion. He coined the phrase "That's poker baby," referring to a particularly bad beat.

On the final hand of his 1998 World Series of Poker main event, a full house was dealt on the table (9-9-8-8-8.). Nguyen made the memorable quote to his foe, Kevin McBride: "You call, gonna be all over baby." McBride called, and Nguyen beat McBride with a better full house (9-9-9-8-8.).

After several World Poker Tour final tables, Nguyen finally won a WPT event in 2006, defeating Michael Mizrachi heads-up. This WPT victory meant Scotty became the 4th person to win both the main event of the World Series of Poker and a World Poker Tour title.

Scotty narrowly missed the final table of the 2007 World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in Main Event finishing in 11th place from a field of 6,358, earning a little over $475,000 for his 11th place finish.

Nguyen finished second at the 2007 World Series of Poker in the 7 Card Stud high low split eight or better event won by Eli Elezra.

After the event he told he hadn't played in cash games in over two years because he disliked taking other peoples money.

As of 2007, his total live tournament winnings exceed $7,500,000.

Mendacious Facts

When Scotty was still searching for his first big win, he drove a 1978 Camaro to a mid town event.

Once there, he found that the car's door lock had jammed and so had to scramble across the seats to exit the car on the passenger side. Since winning that event (besides buying a new car) when arriving at poker events, he has kept to the tradition of getting out of his car on the wrong side.
