Jude (or Judas) is a Christian saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus.
He should not be confused with Judas Iscariot, another apostle and later the
betrayer of Jesus (oops... I hope I didn't give away the ending to the book).
Jude is the patron saint of lost causes.
The poker god Jude Thaddeus is invoked in desperate situations because in his
new testament letter, it stresses that the faithful should persevere in the
environment of harsh, difficult circumstances just as their forefathers had
done before them.
